Download Archy

Archive Notice: This page is part of the Jef Raskin historical archive, preserved for its academic and historical significance.

Archy Downloads

Archy was originally distributed as a free, open-source download from the Raskin Center for Humane Interfaces website. The software was written in Java and ran on Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.

Current Availability

The RCHI is no longer actively distributing or maintaining Archy. The original download links are no longer functional. Copies of the source code may exist in various open-source archives and repositories, but these have not been updated to work with modern Java runtimes or contemporary operating systems without modification.

Historical Requirements

When it was actively distributed, Archy required a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and ran as a standalone application. The system requirements were modest by the standards of the time, reflecting the software’s focus on simplicity and efficiency rather than graphical complexity.

Exploring Raskin’s Ideas Today

While Archy itself is no longer readily available, the ideas it embodied continue to influence interface design. Jef Raskin’s book The Humane Interface remains in print and provides the theoretical framework that guided Archy’s development. Researchers and designers interested in modeless interaction, LEAP-based navigation, and zoomable interfaces can find a rich body of literature building on Raskin’s foundational work.
